“Anything you want to talk about?” Arthur shakes his head. “There’s nothing wrong,” he says. Which is not, strictly speaking, a lie, and yet isn’t the whole truth either. “Yet there’s something on your mind,” Merlin says, with the uncanny ability he sometimes displays of picking up on what’s been left unsaid. Arthur sighs. His crossbow is now dangling from his loose hand at his side, and he taps it against his leg twice before replying. “I don’t want Guinevere to worry.” It’s neither a confirmation nor a denial, but Merlin nods in understanding. “I won’t tell her anything you don’t want me to.” Arthur looks at him. Merlin means it — as much as he’d dislike to keep something from Guinevere, he would do so if Arthur told it to him in confidence. And there is something that’s been weighing on Arthur’s mind, as Merlin has already guessed. What Merlin doesn’t know is just how much Arthur’s worries concern him, too — and that if he hasn’t seen much of Arthur it’s because, unconsciously, Arthur might have been trying to avoid him.
